Best currency for online trading?

I’m a novice about to open an online trading account. Does it make any difference which currency your cash is in? Ie I am and Australian living in the United Arab Emirates (I get paid in dirhams). I’ve heard Ameritrade and Scottrade are good and a lot of Australians use ING will I have to buy US or AUS dollars to trade?
NB: I want to buy Australian, Asian and UAE stocks.
